Nikki Oesterle is a Whanganui-based painter working across figurative and abstract painting. Her work is driven by an interest in bodies, places and memory, and by what happens when familiar forms are pulled apart, obscured or reconstructed.
Her recent paintings have centred on women in motion - falling, floating, twisting and suspended in moments between movement and stillness. Her newest work shifts towards places connected to her own biography, using the shapes of coastlines, rivers and landscapes as a starting point for abstraction. Layered colour, drawing, fragments of writing and physically cut and woven canvas come together in works that sit somewhere between map, memory and imagined landscape.
