The Black Pixie is the maker name of Jillaine Murray, who works across many mediums. From OOAK art dolls to mixed media paintings, textile collage and sculpture and eclectic jewellery made of all sorts, her work is unique and quirky. Upcycling and repurposing items to give them a new life is a big part of her kaupapa. Of dual Maori (Ngati Marukukere) and Pakeha (English/Scottish/French) decent, her work is rich in symbolism relating to her multicultural identity, the quest for a sense of self, the despair of displacement, the joy of connecting with her whakapapa, strong feminine messaging, the love of her nature and folklore. Pieces are often playful whilst telling a story of ancestral connections, spiritual connectedness, courage, kindness and bravery along the way.
