Denice Midgley

I come from a creative family. My grandfather painted in oils. My mother was an art teacher. My father won a scholarship at 15 to study art at Bradford Grammar school, which he declined, prefering instead to join the workforce. My sister qualified as a textile designer and my brother is a silversmith and teaches jewellery making in the UK. My journey with art has been more circuitous, having been told at school to follow a more academic path, I turned to art to keep me grounded and balanced. In my youth I dabbled. It is only as I have grown older that I have taken it more seriously and begun to explore the option of being a professional artist. Mostly self-taught I have attended an illustration course at Massey University as part of a degree but I decided the academic path for expressing my artistic side was not for me. i have a degree in Business Studies, a Masters in Management and a degree in Counselling. I prefer to explore my creativity in a more organic and natural way. I find being creative uplifting and an exciting way to express myself.
