Jillaine Murray

Jillaine Murray is a full time artist based in Whanganui. Her first love is textile art, although she works across many mediums creating works under her craft name The Black Pixie.
Of dual Maori (Ngati Marukukere) and Pakeha (English/Scottish/French) her work is heavily symbolic of her quest for a sense of self and identity. Jillaine describes connecting with her whakapapa later in life as a homecoming, an inner settling if you will. Positive feminine messaging is a big part of her kaupapa. Masks, stars, “things in threes”, Queen Elizabeth, the hare and Frida Kahlo all have several layers of meaning when used in her work. Her work celebrates ancestral connections, spiritual connectedness, courage, kindness and bravery along the way.
