Glen Macmillan

I have always loved the natural world and am a tactile person. I mould wax until I'm satisfied with the result then perform every one of many steps to transform that into a lively little Bronze. My other medium, steel junk, is totally different. The process is more of a dialogue between my intentions and the discipline of using preformed shapes to create a sculpture. I make this more difficult by only using scrap steel for hidden structural elements. I do not for instance, when an area such as a face proves difficult, cut steel junk into unrecognizable scrap steel, then bend it conveniently to suit. Scrap steel and steel junk are not the same thing. Steel junk is recognizable as being a thing or part of a thing, even if you don't know what. Scrap steel is just not new steel. I treat my subjects, usually animals, with respect and try to give them a voice. I don't exploit them for effect. I study images of a creature including their skeletons then hopefully see them in real life to get images from uncommon angles and to see them move.
