Meet the artists behind the art
20 - 28 March 2021
52 – Lysha Brennan
Like jewels plucked from a royal crown, Huia feathers were given as tokens of friendship and respect. In a culture without money, tribes occupying the Huia country of Te Ika a Maui Aotearoa sent the feathers as gifts, or traded them with others. In this series of works I have used the Huia bird and imagery of New Zealand floral and fauna as symbols representing the past where items of value were traded, with devastating consequences.
