Whanganui: the eclectic art capital of Aotearoa

I am Whanganui born, raised in a creative family with an early interest in drawing and painting. I joined after-school art classes with my primary school teacher/local artist, the late Barbara McPhail. Later in my own teaching career, this passion for visual art was further strengthened and I always added visual art into a rich, integrated programme.
Now retired, art is my pleasurable pastime. After participating in recent art courses through Community Education Whanganui with local artist, Pauline Allomes, I developed palette knife skills and use of layered colours to create light and shadow in artworks. Another local artist, Sandra Morris, inspired me to use water colour again. After workshops with Rangitikei artist and teacher, Tammie Hodgetts, I am on a new direction with my own interpretation of semi abstract Cubist style landscapes.
Inspired by the natural environment, landscapes and semi-abstract paintings make up much of my work which is mostly in acrylic, and mixed media. As a life-long learner, I like the challenge of experimenting with colour, materials and techniques. I'm a keen photographer and enjoy sharing unique environs through my artwork. Colour and light excite and delight me. When viewing my art, I hope you make connections to the intricacies of layered colours and light.
